From June 18 until the end of 2019, actors will perform around 1600 scenes around the station according to a set script, which will allow DB to test whether image analysis software is capable of unambiguously detecting situations that could affect the quality, reliability and safety of the railway operation.

A number of scenarios were selected for the test, including people lying down, entering defined areas, large gatherings in front of escalators, moving groups of people, counting people in a certain area, and detecting stationary objects. DB says it is trying to depict typical situations that have led to operational disruptions in the past.

DB says that with so many cameras providing feeds to both DB’s control centres and the Federal Police, it is not possible to monitor them all at once. The software will be able to detect the various scenarios and flag them, speeding up response.

Three suppliers have provided software for the test:

  • IBM Germany
  • a Hitachi Consortium comprised of Hitachi, Conef, MIG, and
  • Funkwerk video systems and G2K Group.
