When the Unified Railway Communication and Application (Urca) is implemented in 2017, railway users in Finland will be able to use Tetra and public mobile networks for all railway-specific communication functions. Urca will use the Finnish Transport Authority's Virve telecommunications network to provide a national rail voice and dispatch system based on Frequentis' bearer-independent architecture.

"This will enable us to reduce our communications costs significantly," says Mr Markku Voutilainen from the Finnish Transport Agency. "We can concentrate on solutions and applications instead of spending time and money renewing our own radio network only for railway communication."
