TANZANIA Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) has entered negotiations with SMH Rail, Malaysia, over the rehabilitation of locomotives and wagons as part of an effort to ease the railway's chronic stock shortage.

Tazara managing director Mr Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika said the discussions were in line with capacity enhancement and service improvement initiatives launched through the Smart Partnership Programme, which was endorsed at the June meeting of the Tazara Council of Ministers.

Under the proposed arrangement, SMH Rail will carry out regular maintenance for a specific period, while Tazara will provide facilities and staff for the work.
