UZBEKISTAN Railways (UTY) extended the operation of its Talgo 250 Afrosiyob trains to Bukhara on September 15 following the completion of a $US 400m project to upgrade and electrify the 256km line from Samarkand.

The 250km/h 25kV ac trains are initially operating one return service a day between the Uzbek capital Tashkent and Bukhara with a journey time of 3h 47min.

Each train is formed of two power cars and nine intermediate trailers seating 257 passengers in three classes.

Talgo delivered two Afrosiyob sets to UTY in 2011 for Tashkent - Samarkand services. UTY subsequently placed a €38m order for two additional trains in November 2015, with delivery scheduled for next year.
