PERTH's Forrestfield-Airport Link took an important step towards the start of construction on July 13, when Western Australia's Environmental Protection Authority recommended the $A 2.2bn ($US 2bn) project for conditional approval.

The line will branch off the existing Midland Line, just east of Bayswater station with new stations at Airport West, Consolidated Airport, and Forrestfield. Most of the route will be underground in an 8km twin-bore tunnel beneath the Swan River and the airport.

Three consortia were shortlisted in May for a design-build contract to construct the link and work is scheduled to begin at the end of next year. Passenger services are due to start in 2020.
