NETHERLANDS RAILWAYS (NS) is to operate peak-hour bus services from today in an effort to relieve overcrowding on its busiest rail services.

NS has ordered 33 three-car and 25 four-car Stadler Flirt-3 EMUs, which are due to enter service from the end of 2016, and 118 CAF Sprinter EMUs from 2018. However, such is the concern about levels of overcrowding before the new trains are delivered that it is introducing additional buses between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and the towns of Krommenie-Assendelft and Casticum with other areas to follow. Passengers using the buses will receive vouchers for food and drink as road journey times are longer than rail.
