THE first class 1293 Vectron multi-system electric locomotive for Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) made its main line debut on February 14 with a test run from Siemens’ plant at Munich-Allach to Reichertshausen on the Munich - Ingolstadt line.

ÖBB awarded Siemens a framework contract for up to 200 Vectrons in January 2017. The contract includes an initial firm order worth around €120m for 30 ETCS-equipped multi-system locomotives, which will be certified for operation in more than 10 countries in central and eastern Europe as well as Germany and Italy.

Delivery of the 6.4MW 160km/h locomotives is due to start in the middle of the year. In the meantime, ÖBB has leased a number of Vectrons for use in Tyrol and Italy.

The framework contract includes options for up to 100 ac Vectrons, 50 ac units with last-mile diesel modules, and 50 multisystem locomotives.
