DHAKA Mass Transit Company (DMTCL) has awarded Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and Mitsubishi Corporation a Yen 40bn ($US 360m) contract for the supply of 24 six-car metro trains for Dhaka MRT Line 6, together with maintenance depot equipment.

KHI will be responsible for the project management, design, manufacture, testing, commissioning, and supply of rolling stock and maintenance equipment, while Mitsubishi will be responsible for commercial administration and supply of depot equipment. KHI will supervise maintenance of the rolling stock and depot equipment, which will be performed by DMTCL.

The 19.8m-long stainless-steel cars will be equipped with internal and external CCTV cameras for passenger safety, and air-conditioning to increase passenger comfort in Dhaka City’s humid conditions.

The north-south line will be 20km long, serving 16 stations, connecting Uttara North to Motijheel.
