ANSALDOBREDA has secured a Euros 33 million contract to revamp Milan Transport's (ATM) ageing fleet of Jumbo Trams which have been in operation since the 1970s.

The contract includes both the interior design and engineering work on 51 type 4900 vehicles with an option to conduct work on the remaining 49 trams in the fleet. AnsaldoBreda will work with Sitav, Italy, on the project, with the first vehicle expected to be completed in June 2011. The work is set to be concluded by mid-2013.

"It represents another step forward in the plan to modernise ATM vehicles. Since last year the fleet has had more than 300 new vehicles including trams and metro trains."
