CHINA's National People's Party Standing Committee has voted to dismiss Mr Liu Zhijun as railway minister and appoint Mr Sheng Guangzu to replace him. Sheng was head of the General Administration of Customs and is a former vice-minister in the Ministry of Railways.
Liu, who has been minister of railways since 2003, was suspended on February 12 for alleged "severe violation of discipline," a term used in China to describe corruption and abuse of power by officials. Liu was believed to have been under investigation for inappropriate links to a company in Shanzi province supplying equipment for a high-speed rail project.
