TRENITALIA has exercised an option worth Euros 128m to acquire a further 50 E464 Bo-Bo electric locomotives from Bombardier. The locomotives will be assembled at Bombardier's Vado Ligure site near Genoa and will be delivered in 2012-13.

The E464 is one of Europe's most numerous locomotive types, with 688 ordered in various batches since the late 1990s and 570 now in service. The 3.5MW 160km/h single-cab locomotives are mostly used on and regional and interregional services. They can be found across Italy and are also used to operate TiLo services into Switzerland.
