The trains, which will be similar to EuskoTren's existing UT900 series EMUs, will enter service between 2015 and 2020 and will be capable of accommodating up to 300 passengers.

The initial batch of 12 units will be allocated to metro Line 3, which will link Matiko station in the city centre with the district of Extebarri. The 5.9km line is due to open in 2016 and will be the first section of the metro network to be operated by EuskoTren.

The remaining 16 units will be used to replace some of EuskoTren's oldest units, which date from the mid-1980s.
