According to Adif, Alstom will design an ERTMS system for the mixed-gauge lines at its technology centre in Malaga. Alstom will also conduct track testing, develop new products to enhance the systems functionality raised, and obtain safety certification.
Adif has to date upgraded 170km of track to accommodate dual gauge, predominantly between Barcelona and the French border, as well as some individual sections including the Tardienta - Huesca line, with 99% of the work carried out by Alstom. The Mediterranean Freight Corridor, which is reliant on the institution of dual-gauge to allow services to operate seamlessly between eastern Spain and Northern Europe, is expected to be operational by 2015.
The project is part of a five-year agreement between Adif and Alstom signed in November 2012 to carry out research and development projects in Malaga.
