The Victoria state government is planning to expand its rail network to cope with population growth, which surpassed 6.5 million last year. The goal is to develop an integrated operation system, which can meet future demand while offering passengers a reliable and quality service.

Working with its partner German Rail (DB), Arup will advise on a number of major rail projects proposed in both Melbourne and regional Victoria, including the Melbourne Airport Rail and Geelong Fast Rail projects, as well as the Western Rail Plan, which aims to progressively improve rail connectivity to the western suburbs.

Arup and DB will study how integration of the new projects with the existing network can maximise the operational efficiency of the full network.

Arup will also help develop a network-wide rail strategy and supporting operating plans for defined rail corridors. This strategy will support coordinated delivery of the planned future benefits from each project through developing effective operating strategies.
