The Italian government is funding the initial order under its “rail cure” initiative to improve urban rail transport networks. Delivery will start in autumn 2021. This will be followed by a second order for the remaining 40 LRVs.
The air-conditioned 28m-long low-floor LRVs will be shorter than the vehicles currently operating in Turin, but due to a better internal layout they will be able to carry more passengers.
The LRVs have been designed by Giugiaro Architettura and will have a yellow and blue livery to match GTT’s newest buses. The LRVs will have large windows and transparent side areas in the roof to increase internal brightness and improve external visibility. Passengers with reduced mobility will have two dedicated areas to ease access.
“The vehicles we will provide to GTT are part of the new tram platform developed in Italy by Hitachi Rail, an evolution of the previous Sirio model and, at the same time, a synthesis of new technologies and ever higher performance in terms of safety, sustainability, comfort and travel experience for passengers,” says Hitachi Rail Italy’s chairman, Mr Maurizio Manfellotto.
