WORKERS laid the final section of track on August 14 on a new Yuan 4.5bn ($US 706m) line in southwest China which will eventually provide a second standard-gauge connection to Vietnam.

The 141km line is an extension of the Kunming – Yuxi line to Mengzi and will open later this year.

The line passes through mountainous terrain and has 35 tunnels and 61 bridges which together make up 55% of the route. The maximum speed on the line will be 120km/h. An extension to Hekou on the Vietnam border is under construction.
