Athens metro extension contract signed
ATTIKO Metro has signed a €344m contract with a consortium of Alstom, J&P Avax, and Ghella to extend Athens Metro Line 3 by 7.5km and six new stations to the Port of Piraeus.

Renfe results defy economic downturn
DESPITE Spain's economic difficulties, national train operator Renfe achieved a 3% increase in passenger numbers last year. Ridership rose to 486 million, the first increase since the economic crisis began, albeit still a long way short of the record 550 million journeys posted in 2006.

LRV approvals cause consternation in Munich
GERMANY has gained an unfortunate reputation in recent years for the protracted certification of new rolling stock. Delays in approving mainline trains, such as the Bombardier Talent 2 emus ordered by German Rail (DB), have become an embarrassment for operators contractually-bound to introduce new trains but forced to hire older vehicles.

SuperVia to order 60 more emus from CNR Changchun
RIO de Janeiro suburban rail operator SuperVia has selected CNR Changchun, China, as the preferred bidder for a Reais 542.6m ($US 320.1m) contract to supply 60 emus. Other bidders included CSR, CAF, and Alstom.

Crossrail issues rolling stock and depot tender
