STADLER and Knorr-Bremse have concluded an agreement under which Knorr Brake Company (KBC), Knorr-Bremse’s United States-based passenger rail subsidiary, will provide braking systems to Stadler’s US subsidiary for 254 metro cars Stadler US is supplying to Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (Marta).
The long-term contract, valued at “a lower double-digit million-euro sum,” runs from the beginning of 2022 through to 2028. The project is KBC’s first order for braking systems with Marta, which awarded Stadler US a contract worth more than $US 600m in March 2019 to supply 127 two-car metro trains with options for up to 50 additional sets.
KBC will supply bogie brake equipment, Knorr-Bremse’s PistonSupply Eco (VV80-T) oil-free compressors, which feature dedicated air supply inverters designed and produced specifically for US metro applications.
The contract also includes brake controls and wheel slide protection (WSP) dump valves, which will interface with the train control and management system (TCMS) via a platform developed by Selectron, Knorr-Bremse’s subsidiary for integrated digital and cyber security solutions.
Most of the braking components will be produced at KBC’s facility in Westminster, Maryland, with the vehicles to be manufactured by Stadler US at its Salt Lake City, Utah, plant. The new trains will replace existing metro trains used on Marta’s 77km network from 2023.
