RŽD ordered 13 high-speed Velaro Rus trains from Siemens and Ural Locomotives, a joint venture of the Sinara Group and Siemens, in June 2019, with the order worth around €1.1bn.

This is the third such contract between Knorr-Bremse and Siemens to equip the Velaro Rus trains in Russia. Knorr-Bremse will begin supplying braking, entrance and HVAC systems, windscreen wipers and power electrics for 13 10-car high-speed trains from the fourth quarter of 2020.

Each Sapsan EMU will carry 604 passengers and have a top speed of 250km/h, allowing them to complete the 650km journey between Moscow and St Petersburg in around 3h 45min.

The equipment must meet particularly demanding requirements due to the extreme climatic conditions, with the systems supplied by Knorr-Bremse designed to operate reliably at temperatures down to -50°C.

The full Sapsan fleet, including the 13 new trains on order, are covered by a 30-year maintenance contract with Siemens. Knorr-Bremse RailServices is contracted to carry out the maintenance on the systems supplied by Knorr-Bremse at its St Petersburg service centre.
