CAF Digital Services has installed its LeadMind digital platform on the fleet of 14 Urbos 3 LRVs that operate on the 12km Canberra Metro light rail route connecting the city centre with Gungahlin.

Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF supplied the five-section Urbos 3 LRVs for the route which opened in 2019 and is responsible for fleet maintenance over the 20-year concession period.

LeadMind combines data acquisition and advanced analytics, providing real-time access to vehicle health to enable predictive maintenance to improve availability, reliability and safety.

Fleet performance is continuously monitored throughout each journey. By detecting anomalies in service, LeadMind enables maintenance tasks to be prioritised, ensuring that resources are directed only where they are required.

As well as providing support to drivers, the system features email notification of defects which automates fault diagnosis.

Future extensions to the Canberra Metro network are planned to include catenary-free sections, and here LeadMind will support the onboard energy storage system, monitoring operational efficiency and reliability.

CAF says that its LeadMind system has been supplied to over 40 projects and is now monitoring vehicle health on 1000 trains and 5000 cars around the world.
