LILLE’s metropolitan government (MEL) has awarded Alstom a framework contract worth €124m for 30 32.4m-long Citadis LRVs for lines R and T of the city’s light rail network.

The initial order is for 24 vehicles, with an option for six more. The latter may be to accommodate traffic growth or to operate planned extensions to the network for which no completion date has yet been set.

The new LRVs will be introduced in 2026 to replace the 24 30m vehicles built by Breda in 1993-94 and later refurbished by Bombardier (now Alstom). The LRVs will have four double doors on each side and will have a minimum capacity for 196 passengers.

The 1000mm- gauge lines R and T run from Lille to Roubaix and Tourcoing.

Fleet renewal is being overseen by Keolis, which holds a seven-year concession to operate the Lille public transport network. The €2bn contract, awarded in December 2017, runs until 2025 and requires the replacement of the light rail fleet.
