AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has launched a market survey to procure battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) for operation in Austria and Germany.

The fleet will have a maximum speed of 160km/h under electric power and 120-140km/h under battery power, and be able to operate under both 15kV 16.7Hz ac and 25kV 50Hz ac electrification.

ÖBB is looking for two variants that are 50m and 100m long with capacity to seat 110 and 200 passengers respectively. The trains must be designed for harsh winter conditions and must be able to pass trains travelling through tunnels at 250km/h.

The battery should provide a range of 80-100km, and be able to be charged both while operating and at stations. The BEMUs should be delivered within 36 months of the contract award, with the possibility to offer maintenance as an option.

Manufacturers have until April 30 to respond to the market survey, after which ÖBB may then launch a formal tender procedure.
