ROLLING stock leasing company Railpool has signed a framework contract with Alstom for the supply of 27 Traxx AC3 and Traxx DC3 locomotives, with an option for a further 15.

The locomotives are intended for use in Poland, Italy, Norway and Sweden and will be built at Alstom’s sites in Kassel, Germany, and Vado Ligure, Italy, for delivery from 2024.

The Traxx locomotives are capable of 5.6MW, and 6.0MW using power boost mode, and battery and diesel last-mile technology is also be fitted.

Railpool says it will also be moving nine earlier Traxx AC2 locomotives from its existing fleet to Sweden and Norway, where it now has its own locomotive workshops in Gothenburg, Malmö and Oslo since acquiring Nordisk TogTeknikk and its subsidiary NTT Sverige in 2022.

"We are pleased to be swiftly meeting the increasing demand for rolling-stock in Sweden and Norway, providing more of our reliable fleet and additionally feeding the region with up to 20 new Traxx AC3 last mile locomotives,” says Railpool CEO, Mr Torsten Lehnert.

In Italy, Railpool has become the leasing company with the largest homogeneous fleet of Traxx DC3 last mile locomotives in the country. As for Poland, at the beginning of February Railpool celebrated the official inauguration of its newly established Railpool Polska division’s offices in Poznań.

In January 2022, Railpool signed a previous order with Alstom for 15 Traxx locomotives, with an option for five additional units, for use in Italy, Sweden and Norway. That order comprised 10 AC3 locomotives for use in Scandinavia and five DC3 locomotives for service in Italy and delivery of that order is scheduled to take place between the second and fourth quarters of 2023.
