SPANISH national operator Renfe has exercised an option to purchase an additional 32 EMUs for medium-distance services on its 1668mm-gauge network from CAF under a contract awarded in October 2022.

Renfe initially awarded CAF a €290m contract to supply 28 EMUs, along with an option for another 42 EMUs. Under the contract, a Renfe-CAF joint venture will provide maintenance and spare parts for 17 trains for 15 years, while Renfe will maintain the remaining 11 trains itself.

Under the €190m option now exercised, Renfe has ordered 24 three-car trains and eight four-car trains.

The EMUs will be similar to those currently in production, with a maximum operating speed of 200km/h. The trains are equipped with batteries to enable operation on short non-electrified sections of the network or during power failures.

This latest option brings the total value of new rolling stock ordered by Renfe from CAF over the last three years to more than €1bn.
