MÁV-Start and Stadler Bussnang signed a framework contract for the delivery of 11 Kiss double-deck EMUs and an option for a further 29 units in April 2017. The fleet will be used on suburban services from Budapest to Szob, Hatvan and Szolnok.

Bodyshells are being manufactured at Stadler’s plant in Minsk, Belarus, but eight of the intermediate cars will be fitted out by DJJ, which will also be responsible for connecting these cars to the driving cars and placing the eight complete EMUs into service.

All work on the remaining three sets will be carried out at Minsk.

The 132 bogies needed for the 11 trains are being manufactured at Stadler’s bogie competence centre in Szolnok, Hungary.

The fleet will be delivered in 2019-2020 and the installation of ETCS Level 2 will enable operation at 160km/h on recently-upgraded lines.

The Kiss sets will also be capable of operating in multiple with MÁV-Start’s Stadler Flirt EMUs, 123 of which were delivered between 2006 and 2016.

Along with the 10 Flirt and 10 Flirt3 EMUs delivered to GySEV, this will bring the Stadler EMU fleet in Hungary to 154.

The government has approved financing for a further eight Kiss EMUs for MÁV-Start and a contract could be signed before the end of the year.
