PRASARANA Malaysia has awarded a Ringgits 1.56bn ($US 360m) contract to supply 42 driverless trains for Kuala Lumpur metro Line LRT3 to a consortium of CRRC Zhuzhou, Siemens China, and Malaysian partner Tegap Dinamik.

Prasarana says five bidders prequalified for the tender in May 2016.

Each six-car train will accommodate up to 1271 passengers.

The 37km Line LRT 3 will link Bandar Utama in Selangor with Johan Setia, serving Klang, Shah Alam, and Petalang Jaya. The line will have 26 stations, including five interchanges with other urban rail lines, and a feeder bus network will be connect stations with outlying areas.

Prasarana appointed the MRCB George Kent joint venture as project delivery partner in September 2015.

The line is scheduled to open by the end of August 2020.
