STUDIES of the feasibility and alignment in Hungary of the planned Budapest – Bratislava - Brno - Warsaw high-speed line have been completed, Hungary’s National Infrastructure Development Agency (NIF) announced at the end of April.
The line will start from Kelenföld station in Budapest and use the existing line towards Győr as far as Törökbálint which will be upgraded to increase line speeds. From there, the line will head south of the Vértes range and pass to the north of Székesfehérvár, where it will run mostly parallel to the existing Székesfehérvár - Komárom line as far as Kisbér, before heading to Győr and then following a highway to Hegyeshalom and Rajka.
The study claims that this route will require less tunnelling than other options. Construction of a link to Székesfehérvár would enable Budapest - Székesfehérvár inter-city trains to use the route, freeing up paths on the existing line.
The tender for the study was launched after Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary signed an agreement at the V4 summit in October 2018 to develop proposals for the project.
