The contract includes the construction of around 66km of slab track, walkways and ballasted access routes for both tunnel entrances.

FF Koralm will also supply sound and fall protection barriers for the eastern access route, adaptations to the water protection facilities, road construction work, supply and installation of overhead contact line, telecommunications infrastructure, ventilation systems and construction work on the east and west portals.

FF Koralm will also be responsible for the manufacture and operation of temporary construction work during the installation phases until commissioning begins in 2025.

During the construction phase, the joint venture is responsible for the overall coordination of construction logistics and site safety.

The announcement follows the completion of tunnelling work on June 17.

Work will begin in May 2021 and is scheduled to be completed by April 2023. Porr Bau will be the technical lead and Rhomberg Bahntechnik will be responsible for commercial management.

The twin-bore tunnel is at the centre of the new Koralm high-speed railway, a new alignment which will link Klagenfurt, Carinthia, and Graz, Styria, and will reduce travel times between the two cities from three hours currently to 45 minutes.
