ITALIAN infrastructure manager RFI has awarded a €169.5m contract to a group of companies for the design and construction of the 9km Arechi - Pontecagnano Airport extension of the Salerno metro, a commuter rail line in the port city southeast of Naples.

The group awarded the contract comprises RCM Costruzioni; Brancaccio Costruzioni; Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie (GCF); and the Eteria consortium of Itinera, Vianini Lavori, and Icop.

The project, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), is to build construct a single-track electrified line parallel to the double-track Salerno - Battipaglia line, with four new stations. RFI launched the tender for the contract in December 2022.

The line will improve public transport connections with Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport through the creation of an integrated rail-air service between the airport and the urban centres of Pontecagnano and Salerno, as well as easing road congestion.

The land for the site of the airport station between highway 18 and the Salerno - Battipaglia line was purchased in February 2021.

The new line to the airport is expected to open in 2026.
