TRANSLINK, the operator of Northern Ireland’s rail network, has awarded a framework contract to design and manage the refurbishment and renewal of its signalling and telecommunications infrastructure to two contractors.

The contract is valued at up to £250m and runs for an initial five-year period, with an option for a three-year extension.

Under the framework, AtkinsRéalis and Babcock International will carry out multidisciplinary design, construction and commissioning works on a wide range of projects, including renewing lineside signalling assets, level crossings, and control and interlocking systems.

Translink’s rail network covers around 480km of track, which carry nearly 13 million passengers each year.

“Robust signalling and telecommunications systems are important foundations of any rail network,” says Mr Ian Edwards, president and CEO of AtkinsRéalis, “with modern systems underpinning the ability of rail to provide sustainable connectivity.”
