The order is being funded by South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF). Production is due to begin at the Changwon plant in Korea from 2020 with delivery expected by 2021.

The 17m-long, 2.7m-wide metre-gauge locomotives are designed for both passenger and freight operation, with a maximum speed of 100km/h. Unlike previous locomotives delivered to BR, the new locomotives will have air conditioning installed in the drivers’ cabs.

The order is the latest between BR and Hyundai Rotem, including a $US 239m order in October to supply 70 diesel-electric locomotives.
