The 160km/h 3kV dc electric locomotives were ordered under a €130m contract awarded in February 2018. The 5.5MW units are fitted with ETCS Level 1.

The locomotives are being manufactured at Alstom’s Belfort plant in France while Alstom’s Moroccan team is responsible for after sales service and maintenance. Five other Alstom plants are involved in production of the locomotive: Le Creusot (bogies), Ornans (motors), Petit Quevilly (transformers), Tarbes (traction chain components), and Vileurbanne (onboard electronics). ETCS components are produced in Madrid.

Alstom has already supplied 20 Prima locomotives to Morocco, which entered service in 2011.
