The Evolution Series Tier 4 was developed to meet United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emission standards. Wabtec says the locomotives reduce emissions by more than 70% compared with Tier 3 designs, without the need for exhaust gas aftertreatment.

Variants of the locomotive are in service with Canadian National (CN), CSX, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Navajo Mining, Norfolk Southern (NS) and Union Pacific (UP).

Wabtec says the fleet has already covered more than 160 million-km in service with railways in North America.

The 1000th locomotive is an ET44AC for CN, which ordered 200 Evolution Series locomotives in December 2017, opting for a further 60 units (including more ET44ACs) in September 2018.

“This achievement underscores our bold decision in 2013 to develop a Tier 4 locomotive,” says Mr Rafael Santana, CEO of Wabtec’s Freight Division. “Delivering 1000 locomotives in less than five years proves it was the right locomotive at the right time to meet market needs.”
