The 26.3km Line R1 from Fangte to Gongyanyuan is a north-south express line serving the western suburbs of Jinan. The line serves four underground and seven elevated stations.

Services are operated by a fleet of 24 four-car type B metro trains.

Line R1 is part of the three-line first phase of the Jinan express metro network, which was approved by China’s National Development and Reform Commission. The 19.9km Line R3 is due to open in December 2020, with the 36.4km Line R2 due for completion by December 2021. Six-car type B trains will operate on both lines.

Ultimately the city plans to build a 262km eight-line urban rail network with 154 stations.

Jinan was the ninth Chinese city to open a new metro line in the space of less than a week following a flurry of openings in the final days of 2018.
