THE third phase of Xi’an Line 1 opened on September 21, taking the total line to 42.1km with 30 stations. The new 10.6km extension runs from Fenghesenlingongyuan to Xianyangxizhan.

The first 25.4km Fangzhicheng - Houweizhai section of Line 1 opened on September 15 2013, followed by the 6.1km Houweizhai - Fenghesenlingongyuan section on September 26 2019.

The new extension, which cost Yuan 7bn ($US 958.2m), has seven underground stations. The line interchanges with Line 16 at Shanglinlu station, and provides a connection to the mainline at Xianyangxizhan station, which is located beside the Xianyang (West station) mainline station. The line will eventually interchange with the planned lines 11, 18 and 19.

The tender to build the line was won by China Power Construction, with a bid of Yuan 3bn which included civil engineering, track laying and construction of the power supply system. Construction of phase three began on December 31 2019.

Services are operated using B-type six-car trains, with three power cars and an operating speed of 80km/h.
