THE European Commission (EC) has appointed Ms Magda Kopczynska as director general of the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG Move).

Kopczynska replaces Mr Henrik Hololei, who stepped aside in March after it was found he had accepted free flights on Qatar Airways while his team was negotiating a major aviation deal with the Gulf state. Hololei is now an adviser with the Directorate General for International Partnerships (DG Intpa).

The new appointment marks a return to transport policy for Kopczynska, who was director for innovative and sustainable mobility at DG Move between May 2014 and October 2016. She then became director for waterborne transport at the directorate until October 2022, when she took up the post of deputy director general in the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG Agri).

She joined DG Move in May 2009 as head of unit for clean transport and sustainable urban mobility, before becoming head of unit for maritime transport and logistics in April 2014.

Before becoming a civil servant, she managed the Brussels office of Letwiatan, the Polish employers’ confederation, for three years, and also worked for Warsaw city council as the head of the mayor’s office  and beforehand as director of the promotion department.

She has a degree in English literature from Jagiellonian University in Krakow and a post-graduate degree in communications from Warsaw University.
