The memorandum of cooperation was signed in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on March 28 by Russian transport minister Mr Yevgeny Dietrich, Kyrgyzstan’s minister of transport and roads Mr Zhanat Beishenov, RZD general director and chairman, Mr Oleg Belozyorov, and KTJ director general, Mr Kanatbek Abdykerimov.

Under the agreement the two railways will develop a preliminary feasibility study for the expansion and enhancement of the 1520mm-gauge network, including the construction of a new rail corridor between the Chinese and Uzbek borders and improvements to north-south links.
