ROLLING stock leasing company Akiem has awarded a contract to Newag for the supply of 30 Dragon 2 electric locomotives.

The contract, which includes maintenance for eight years from delivery, will be worth nearly €500m if an option for another 50 locomotives is exercised.

The contract comprises 10 multi-system E6MST locomotives for operation in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and 20 3kV dc locomotives for use in Poland. The six-axle locomotives can haul freight trains weighing up 4300 tonnes.

The single-system locomotives will be fitted with hydrotreated vegetable oil-compatible (HVO) diesel engines designed to meet Stage V exhaust emission standards. The 500kW HVO modules will enable the locomotives to operate on partially electrified lines.

“We are very pleased that one of the largest Rosco entities in Europe has chosen our platform of six-axle Dragon 2 electric freight locomotives by placing the largest value order for our vehicles in the history of our company,” says Mr Zbigniew Konieczek, president of Newag.
