AKIEM European Rolling Stock Leasing has signed a framework contract with Alstom for the supply of 100 Traxx Universal multi-system (MS3) locomotives.

The contract is worth up to €500m and includes a firm order for 65 of the 160km/h locomotives, which can support passenger and freight operation and will be certified to operate in 12 countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia.

All of the locomotives will be equipped with Alstom’s Atlas onboard ETCS equipment and some will be fitted with either a battery or diesel engine to support last mile operation in ports, terminals and industrial sites.

Mr Fabien Rochefort, CEO of Akiem, says that the order will support the provision of new efficient and sustainable rail services, contributing to modal shift in Europe. In particular, he says that 55 of the locomotives will operate cross-border services from France.

“We are intending to contribute to the rejuvenation of rail freight and inter-city passenger transport in France and ease innovation and competition with the support of our maintenance and service teams,” Rochefort says.

Final assembly of the locomotives is planned to take place at Alstom’s plant in Kassel, Germany. Deliveries are scheduled between 2025 and 2028.
