CHINA Railways (CR) has introduced the first CR200J EMU developed by CRRC on the Qinghai - Tibet line.

The inaugural service departed from Xining station and ran to Golmud.

CRRC says that the new train has traction equipment concentrated in a single power car and is designed to operate at high altitude and in the low temperatures common on the western section of the Qinghai - Tibet line.

The train has nine cars, including the power car, and can operate at up to 160km/h with capacity for a maximum of 676 passengers. The six-axle power car provides total traction power of 7.2MW, a 30% increase on the conventional Bo-Bo locomotives previously deployed to haul passenger trains on the Qinghai - Tibet line.
