Polish State Railways (PKP) subsidiary PKP Intercity has awarded two contracts with a total value of Zloty 270m ($US 64.3m ) for the modernisation of 40 passenger coaches following an open tender.

Pesa Mińsk Mazowiecki, based in the Polish town of Mińsk Mazowiecki, will modernise eight type Z1A first class coaches, while H Cegielski Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych (FPS) of Poznań will refurbish 32 type Z1B second class coaches and six Z1B-PRM coaches equipped with facilities for passengers with reduced mobility.

The contracts are part of PKP IC’s Zlotys 24.5bn investment programme, the largest in its history.

The coaches will be returned to service within three years of contract signing, and the contractors will be responsible for ongoing maintenance.

The upgraded coaches will meet the requirements of the European TSI for passengers with reduced mobility, and will feature a renewed interior with new seats in both first and second class, power sockets, individual lights for each seat, a controlled-emission toilet system, passenger Wi-Fi, and new swing doors. The refurbished coaches will have a maximum speed of 200km/h.
