MOSCOW Metro introduced the first of a new fleet of Moskva-2024 trains built by Transmashholding subsidiary Metrowagonmash on Line 2/Zamoskvoretskaya on March 11.
Metronwagonmash is supplying the new trains under an option from a contract signed between Moscow Metro and Transmashholding in 2020.
The manufacturer is expected to deliver 500 metro cars in 2024-25 following the 170 new Moskva-2020 trains comprising 1360 cars that it supplied between 2020 and 2023. These trains are used on Line 5/Koltsevaya, Line 6/Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya and Line 11/Bolshaya Koltsevaya.
Moskva-2024 trains offer a 10% increase in capacity compared with the Soviet-era class 81-717/81-714 trains they are replacing as the Line 2 fleet is entirely renewed over the next three years. Moscow Metro says additional standing space in the aisles means each car is able to carry 17 more passengers. The doors are also 32% wider, improving boarding and alighting. Each train has 176 passenger information displays and is equipped with USB chargers mounted in handrails, while there are plans to introduce Type-C ports and additional connectors to meet changing customer requirements.
Moscow Metro says it has reduced the average age of the city’s metro fleet from 24 years to 12 since 2010.
“With modern cars constituting 74% of the Moscow Metro's rolling stock, this unveiling marks a significant step towards fulfilling the city's commitment to innovation and efficiency,” Moscow Metro says. “Renovation of the rolling stock does not stop here - now the development of an even more modern Moskva-2026 series is underway.”
