WORK has begun on a business case to extend the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport Line from the Western Sydney Aerotropolis via Leppington to Glenfield, where it would reconnect with the Sydney rail network.
The extension would serve one of Sydney’s fastest-growing regions and connect the area to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. The final business case is expected to be completed in 2024.
A metro line between Western Sydney Aerotropolis and Leppington was identified as a project for investigation as part of the Future Transport Strategy 2056. In June 2020, Transport for New South Wales protected transport corridors in Western Parkland City to enable construction of the new line.
The extension would continue the under-construction 23km Western Airport Line linking St Marys with Aerotropolis. Work on the first stage of the line has started, with tunnelling expected to begin in 2023.
Meanwhile, work to connect the Metro City and Southwest Line with the existing Metro North West Line at Chatswood is almost complete.
More than 100 workers worked over a weekend to remove, realign and rebuild two 50m sections of track that will join the City and Southwest Line’s 15.5km twin-bore tunnels with the existing North West Line to Tallawong.
The connection will extend Sydney Metro from Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour and the city centre, to Bankstown.
