Rio Tinto completes automation of Pilbara rail network
RIO Tinto announced on December 28 that it has successfully completed its $US 940m AutoHaul project to automate the operation of its 1700km heavy-haul rail network in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which it says is now the “world’s largest robot and first automated heavy-haul, long-distance rail network.”

Dutch launch main line Automatic Train Operation trials
DUTCH infrastructure manager ProRail began testing Automatic Train Operation (ATO) on the country’s main line rail network on December 19, when an ETCS Level 2-equipped V100 diesel locomotive operated by Rotterdam Rail Feeding (RRF) ran in ATO mode on the freight-only Betuweroute.

THE Association of American Railroads (AAR) filed comments with the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) on November 3, calling on the agency to extend the same pro-innovation approach to private freight railroads that is afforded to highway vehicles when preparing regulations on automation.
