THE first section of the Terzo Valico project to build a 53km high-speed/high-capacity (HS/HC) line between Genoa and Milan has entered service. The 8.5km section is at the northern end of the line between Rivalta Scrivia and Tortona where trains will join the existing network to reach Milan.

Work to build the Terzo Valico project is being undertaken for infrastructure manager Italian Rail Network (RFI) by a consortium led by Webuild Group, under the supervision of Italian State Railways’ (FS) engineering consultancy Italferr.

The Rivalta Scrivia - Tortona section of the project has also included work to increase capacity for freight trains running to Milan and Turin, with a junction on the Alessandria - Tortona - Piacenza line enabling trains to reach the intermodal terminal at Rivalta Scrivia.

The freight terminal at Rivalta Scrivia has been completely renewed under a phased programme ensuring that the facility remained operational throughout. The terminal will also be equipped with a fire-fighting system enabling it to handle hazardous materials.

Following the completion of the Terzo Valico works, on January 15 regional passenger services will resume operating on the Arquata Scrivia - Novi Ligure - Rivalta Scrivia - Tortona - Milan route. The station at Rivalta Scrivia is due to reopen in the first half of this year.

Technical interface work for the project was undertaken by the Saturno consortium of Hitachi Rail, Alstom Ferroviaria, Colas Rail Italia and Mermec STE. This has included the installation of two new digital interlockings at Rivia Scrivia and at the junction where the line from Rivia Scrivia joins the Alessandria - Tortona route.

Signalling equipment has been supplied by Hitachi Rail.
