MADRID Metro has announced that work on the extension of Line 3 from Villaverde Alto to El Casar is 65% complete, with 2.2km of tunnel now excavated.

El Casar is on Line 12, the circular line in Madrid’s southern suburbs that is also known as MetroSur.

The extension of Line 3 will provide MetroSur with a second connection to the city centre alongside Line 10. This will directly benefit over 1 million passengers in the municipalities of Getafe, Leganés, Móstoles and Alcorcón by enabling them to reach Sol station in the heart of Madrid in 30 minutes.

El Casar will also become a major public transport interchange which is being built at a cost of €110m. It will also be served by Line C3 of Renfe’s Madrid suburban network and will feature a 500-space car park with recharging points for electric vehicles.

Other new construction now underway includes the 6.9km first phase of the Line 11 extension project, running from Plaza Elíptica to Conde de Casal. It is being built by a consortium of ACS, Acciona and Rover under a €500m contract awarded by the Madrid regional government in July 2022.

The extended Line 11 is eventually intended to provide a new 33kn diagonal connection between Cuatro Vientos in Madrid’s southwestern suburbs and Valdebebas in the northeast.

In 2025 work is due to start on a €209m extension of Line 5 from Alameda de Osuna to Barajas Airport, providing Spain’s largest airport with its second direct metro connection to the centre of Madrid.

Line 13 will be a 3km automated line serving the Madrid Nuevo Norte redevelopment area, running from Chamartín via Fuencarral Sur to Fuencarral Norte. It is expected to open in 2029.

Madrid Nuevo Norte will see 20ha on a 5.5km-long site currently occupied by railway tracks running north from Chamartín station covered over to create a new central business district and 10,500 housing units.

The redevelopment is being promoted as a “100% sustainable city,” where 80% of journeys will be made on foot, by bike, or using public transport.
